4 Physical Quality Tests You Can Perform at Home

You do not need an advanced chemistry laboratory to verify pellet quality. These four simple checks provide immediate clarity:

1. The Water Submersion (Sink) Test: Drop a pellet into a glass of room-temperature water. High-density pellets (>1.12 kg/dm³) must sink immediately to the bottom. If it floats, density is poor. Within 4-6 minutes, it should dissolve cleanly into pure sawdust fibers without any chemical odor.
2. Surface Luster & Hardness Check: A quality pellet has a smooth, shiny exterior with minimal longitudinal fissures and zero crumbly fines at the bottom of the bag.
3. Natural Pine Scent: Pure pine pellets smell like fresh sawn coniferous timber. Any chemical, pungent, or solvent smell indicates recycled furniture waste or artificial glues.
4. Ash Color & Texture: After combustion, ash should be light grey and powdery like talcum powder. Dark black, rocky, or vitrified clumps indicate bark contamination or excessive silica sand.
