What is Clinker (Burn-Pot Slag)?

Clinker is a hard, glassy, stone-like crust that fuses inside the burn pot of a pellet stove or boiler. Over a few days, clinker blocks primary air delivery holes, suffocates combustion, leads to unburned pellet accumulation, and triggers error shutdowns (e.g., "No Ignition" or "Depr Failure").

The Root Causes: Bark, Silica & High Temperatures

Clinker is essentially melted mineral ash. Clean wood ash consists of potassium and calcium oxides with an ash fusion temperature well above 1,200°C. However, when low-grade pellets are produced using whole logs with bark, soil contamination, or sand from forest logging floors, the silica content spikes dramatically.

Silica acts as a chemical flux, depressing the ash melting point down to 850°C-950°C. Inside an active flame reaching 1,000°C, the ash liquifies, coats the burn pot, and solidifies upon cooling into indestructible glass-rock slag.

Combustion Air Calibration

Insufficient primary air is another contributing factor. When combustion airflow is too low, fuel burns in a starved, smoldering state where heat cannot escape into the heat exchanger, creating local hot spots that melt minerals.

Safe Clinker Removal

Never hammer or chisel the cast-iron burn pot with sharp screwdrivers, as this cracks the pot or damages temperature probes. Allow the stove to cool completely; clinker shrinks slightly as it cools and can be gently lifted out with a dull scraper.
